Robespierre and Virtue

"The Story of Civilization" Volume XI, "The Age of Napoleon", "He lived as simply as a proletaire, but he did not imitate the trousered sansculottes; he dressed neatly in dark blue tailcoat, knee breeches, and silk stockings; and he rarely left home before dressing and powdering his hair. He roomed with the carpenter Maurice Duplay in the Rue. St.-Honore; he dined at the family table, and managed on his deputy's pay of eighteen francs a day. From tht foot of earth he was soon to move most of Paris, later most of France. He talked too frequently of virtue, but he practised it; stern and obdurate in public, in his pravate relations "he was generous, compassionate, and ever willing to serve", so said Filippo Buonarrotti, who knew him well. He seemed quite immune to the charms of women; he spent his affections on his younger brother Augustin and Saint-Just; but no one ever impugned his sexual morality. No gift of money could bribe him. When, in the Salon of 1791, an artist exhibited a portrait of him simply inscribed, "The Incorruptible," no one seems to have challenged the term."

Who, you might well ask, was this saintly fellow without fault? Not Napoleon who was charmed by women, open to bribes, and hardly lived like a proletaire. No, this was Robespierre. Though, the description might with changes of only a few place and personal names describe Che Guevara. It is important to note the similarities of these Saintly Revolutionaries. Robespierre was the architect of the Terror, supervising the Committee of Public Safety and selecting who would and would not die on the Guillotine. Similarly Che Guevara ran the firing squads after the Revolution in Cuba and chose who would live and die. Che was also virtuous, drove himself impossibly hard and demanded similarly inhuman virtue from others, except, of course, Castro. This is the face of the Revolutionary saint. Nothing is more dangerous, nothing more ruthless, nothing more merciless in history. Whether their total devotion is given to a Theistic belief in supernatural goods or to an Atheist belief in the creation of a Utopia here on earth, they will allow nothing to stop them, and never hesitate to execute all who stand between them and the realization of their vision.

"The first round of revolutionaries fared reasonably well with the new morality. The second round began in August 10, 1792; the Paris populace deposed Louis XVI, and assumed the irresponsible absolutism of power.... but now there followed, in macabre procession, the September Massacre, the execution of the King and Queen, and the spread of the Terror and the guillotine in what one victim, Mme. Roland, described as "a vast Golgotha of carnage".

This combination of revolution and carnage would be repeated over and over in the two centuries following the French Revolution. The French Revolution set the pattern. It had to struggle with doctrines which opposed the systematic murder of dissenters, and rapidly disposed of those doctrines along with the dissenters. Later Revolutions, simply immediately engaged in the systematic execution of dissenters. Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, Maoist China, Cambodia, Laos, Cuba, around the world throughout the 20th Century Atheist Dogmas set on creating a Utopia on earth engaged in massive orgies of mass murder until the body count went well past 100 millions of human beings slain by these virtuous, incorruptible, saints of Revolution.

Atheists are fond of blaming the evils of the world on the mad, crazy, supernatural beliefs of Theists. Atheists think that anyone who believes in Virgin Birth, the Resurrection of the Dead and Eternal life playing harps and singing hosanna is obviously to insane to be trusted with political power. It is obvious to the Atheist that all the evil in history is due to people like this having political power.

To the Agnostic, the Atheist belief in a worldy Utopia based on idealistic dogmas like Communism, Socialism, Capitalism, or any other Isms is just as insane as the belief in a Utopia in the next world. If anything it is even more dangerous. Crazy people who believe in a Utopia in the next world are a little less inclined to be ruthless and merciless in this one than crazy people who believe they can actually create a Utopia in this world and are ready to do anything necessary to realize their vision.

This is the part of the year when the Calendar of Civilization requires the Church to address the historical sins of Atheist belief systems and the mass murder and genocide associated with them. The Church addressed the horrors of the Reformation at that period, and now addresses these horrors.

It is always wrong to use force to suppress dissent and discussion. Never be prepared to kill someone to force agreement with every twig and leaf of the dogmatic tree which you are partial to. Especially not science. Stalin executed geneticists in the USSR, the greatest chemist in Revolutionary France was sent to the Guillotine. Atheists have sinned against freedom of thought just as viciously as the theists have.

Be prepared to adjust your dogma to fit to facts. Do not attempt to force the facts to fit your dogma by killing the messengers who bring unwelcome facts to your attention.
